Essentials

At many schools, visual arts, dance, physical education, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) are considered extra or special. At College View, we believe these courses are essential to a comprehensive education for the whole child. Movement and art enhance brain function and improve our mental health. These classes help to boost confidence and make us feel more engaged and resilient.

At College View, students rotate through each of these Essentials classes throughout the school year. They are standards-based and offer hands-on opportunities for students to extend their core content knowledge. The Essentials Team organizes integrated arts and cultural events on Thursdays during “Captain’s CREW Day.” CREW stands for Creativity, Respect, Energy, and Wonder. We celebrate sporting events like March Madness, incorporate literacy with Book Relays, and honor celebrations such as Dia de los Muertos or the Lunar New Year, just to name a few. Students also receive Tier 1 social-emotional lessons, check out library books, and have opportunities for special events. Our 3rd – 5th grade students enhance their technology skills through Skill Stuck. Kinder – 2nd grade students also participate in Skill Struck, but rotate through other enrichment opportunities like nutrition, visits from speakers like the Denver Dumb Friends League, and activities by Mad Science to activate their interests at an early age.
